Model evaluation or scoring is an important step for 3D RNA structure prediction. To do this, statistical potentials are usually used as the energy functions for scoring. However, the performance of statistical potentials depends on the reference states used. Here we construct a statistical potential for 3D RNA structure evaluation by using an iterative method that circumvents the reference state problem. The benchmark results show that this statistical potential indeed performs better than existing ones in most cases.
